I wasn't sure it was possible but I survived the day. I was at the office by 6:45am to finish prepping for a meeting that ran from 8am- 5pm. Tomorrow will run just as long but the overall anxiety level around the meeting has ratcheted down from an 11 to a 9. That goes a long way.

I'm going to NY this weekend to see family and then to annual Stationary Show. I won't have much time with Chase but I do have plans to see two shows - "Guys & Dolls" and "Next to Normal." \o/ While I'm gone, my friend Blair is coming by to see about re-tiling the ceiling in my basement guest room. It would be lovely to have the room finished before Kiffle, Ames, Lily, Cranberryink, and Anamchara descend on the 22nd. (SO SOON!!!)

The real purpose of this post is to talk about Criminal Minds. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH TIMES INFINITY.

Tonight's episode )

Oh, and I also need to talk about House. First of all, years ago I spent a summer at Carnegie Mellon University in their musical theater summer program. I'm 99.9% sure it was the summer before my senior year of high school. There was this girl in the program with me, Maria Thayer, and she sang "Bill" from Showboat at some point during the summer. Maria had this adorable Oregon accent and, to this day, when someone references Showboat I always say, "I'm Maria Thayer and I'm going to sing Bill from Showboat." Only I say it in her accent. ANYWAY. Who was a guest star in this week's House? MARIA THAYER! Yes, I know the entire paragraph was leading up to that but still. Maria Thayer is a working actress! I bet she can still sing the hell out of "Bill."

But on to this week's House. WTF?? )

I need to get into work by 7am tomorrow so it's off to bed for me!
My welcome back to work was a 13 hour day to be followed, tomorrow, by THIRTEEN meetings back to back between 9am and 5:30pm. I'd say "thirteen" is an unlucky number but, quite frankly, 14 would be worse. And, yes, my response is a mini pity party. *throws confetti*

I want to talk about the last two episodes of House. Cut for spoilers )

Hmmmm. What else before I climb into bed with Eiger Dreams? I saw "Planet of the Dead" and love both David Tennant and Michelle Ryan SO MUCH.

Oh, life. Despite assurances from the plumber who came on 2/28, there is something wrong with my master bathroom pipes and now half of the ceiling to my basement guest room has collapsed in under a wash of water. After an 8am meeting I came back home to meet the plumber in the hopes that he can do something before my 1- 4pm non-negotiable meeting and my 7pm flight to NY.

It's been a rough week but there's also some great stuff going on:

  • My new icon! BSG on the cover of TV Guide is fantastic and so is this Behind the Scenes photo gallery. As you can imagine, given my BSG posting velocity, I'm kind of worked up about the series finale but all of this media and the total awesomeness of Mary and EJO and Katee and Tricia (and even Callis) is the perfect balm.

  • Criminal Minds. I love Criminal Minds. I also love Prentiss & Rossi and this week's episode pleased my little shipper's heart. Great Prentiss/Rossi fic isn't easy to find but I searched high and low last night and discovered this gem. *basks*

  • Live music. Wednesday night my friend Jessica and I went to see Shemekia Copeland at The Ark. She was amazing. I don't know why I haven't gone to a show there before but I'll definitely be back for more.

  • House. More specifically, House & Wilson. Their sum is greater than the parts.

  • It's Friday which means it's BSG night and, if all goes well when the plumber shows, I'm going to see my family this weekend. \o/

  • I get [livejournal.com profile] carta, [livejournal.com profile] kiffle, and [livejournal.com profile] anamchara next weekend for the BSG finale!! And then a business trip to warm, warm Florida.

Hello, Lazy Saturday. My friend Anne and I cooked dinner last night and sat around talking until 11:30pm. I finally got into bed around 1 and I've spent the morning working my way through my DVR queue.

    SGA. Fret, fret, fret. )

    CSI )

    SPN )

I wish I hadn't watched the scenes from next week's episode, though. The conclusion looks awesome but it gave away more than I wanted to know. (CSI, on the other hand, gave up just enough to have me counting down the days in anticipation.)

    House )

And I don't think I've said anything about this week's Criminal Minds )

As soon as I post and read Lily's Drake & Josh fic I'm going to take a nap. Naps are the best. Then it's off to the A2 Rally For Equality at 3:30pm. I'm going by myself but I am assuming it will be a welcoming group (of college students) and I really want to add my voice to the rally so out in the cold rain I go! Then tonight I have a date for sushi. I love sushi almost as much as I love naps.

    ( Nov. 2nd, 2008 06:53 pm)
Back in February, on the recommendation of two friends, I took Dan Simmon's sci-fi novel, Hyperion, with me on my cruise. I read the book, a story told well in the future in the model of The Canterbury Tales, and enjoyed it but I didn't love it. My friends encouraged me to keep on reading - at least giving the 2nd book in the series, The Fall of Hyperion, a chance. Six months after reading Hyperion, I finally picked up The Fall of Hyperion in August and devoured it. At the end of September I made my way through the third book, Endymion, which is set 274 years after the end of the 2nd, and, today, I finally finished the fourth book in this series, The Rise of Endymion.

All of that is a round about way of saying: I LOVED THIS SERIES.

It's an investment - probably 2200 pages in all - but totally worth it. The Hyperion Cantos is about science, technology, morality, religion, and love. It's about the danger of unchecked power, ambition, and greed and the destructive force of blind faith in pursuit of those aims. It's about living in a universe more expansive than we can imagine and, at it's core, it's a love story. About 3/4 of the way through the final book I was sure I knew what was coming (and I mostly did) and that I wouldn't cry (of course I did).

There's also kick ass time travel in the story. Having just finished the fourth book, I'm overwhelmed at the unexpected threads that carried their way through all four books.

I actually didn't start this post as a book review/rec but there you have it.

Has anyone else read the series? Come talk to me!

This weekend was so productive. Even reading 400+ pages of The Rise of Endymion, I still took care of everything on my list. \o/ That leaves time to watch some CSI tonight. Next up...Pirates of the Third Reich (which I just watched on my iPhone two weeks ago but could watch endlessly).

    A few more things:

  • Dean/Castiel is my new, shiny pairing of choice. I'm pretty picky in the fic I read but if I see it's Dean/Castiel I'll give anything a shot. Kripke makes it so easy to want more.

  • The Viggo movie promo train continues: Viggo Mortensen's history lessons: The actor, who stars in 'Good,' a film adaptation of a play he saw more than 25 years ago about 1930s Germany, sees parallels between the movie plot, the real world in 1982 and the world now.

  • I rarely, if ever, see comedies but "Role Models" looks HYSTERICAL. Not as good as Quantum of Solace, though. I wasn't a Bond fan until Daniel Craig came along.

  • It seems that [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid and I are the only people I know who watched last week's House. Anyone??? Cut for spoilers and video of the final scene )

  • What the heck is General Hospital: Nightshift? And is that Robin Scorpio back in Port Charles?

My Michigan voter registration card arrived in the mail yesterday! I'm ready!!

I caught up on TV last night and watched Bones, House, and SPN. I don't know if this means the shows are doing something right or wrong but I realized I only watch Bones for the dynamic love between Booth & Brennan and I only watch House for the love dynamic between Wilson & House. Everything else is a bonus. Except Hodgins and Foreman. They should stick around.

    House first )

    Bones )

I was going to go to bed early last night but the lure of Supernatural was too great. Supernatural )

Today my team and I are off for store visits and tonight Anne and I are cooking dinner. I suspect there will be much food. I really need to get off my ass and run. I didn't run last week because I was getting ready to leave and then I was too busy eating fish & chips. This week I was recovering from last week. No excuses! Tomorrow I hit the road again. I have a 5k in a week and it's absurd to undo my training right beforehand. Besides, I feel a hint of winter and I need to get in my outdoor running before Michigan pushes me back inside for 5 months.

I rewatched the season finale of House on Monday night and, while it serves its purpose as an EMOTIONAL NIGHTMARE, I have two complaints. Read more... )

I'm so far from prepared for this TV season to start. A two hour season premiere of Bones? Too long even for Booth & Brennan! I don't want to watch many shows and I'm having a difficult time choosing. Currently on my definite list:
    - Bones
    - Criminal Minds
    - CSI (until Grissom leaves)
    - Supernatural
    - SGA
    - BSG (in January)

Toss ups are House, Sarah Conner Chronicles, Heroes (until Bruce Boxleitner is confirmed), Brothers & Sisters, Big Bang Theory, and Dollhouse. I want to watch all of those shows but the thought of watching that much TV every week stresses me. Maybe I'll just need to binge on those shows via my DVR every few weeks.

In other news, this week's favorite pastime at work is discussing the ever nuttier Sarah Palin. Now [livejournal.com profile] between_names reminds me why no one does it better than Jon Stewart:

Last night was my date with the guy from the market. Beforehand I met up with my friend Anne at her house for a drink and then headed out for a late dinner. Seriously, I can not go for dinner at 9pm. I need to be getting ready for bed at 9pm. But the date was great! He's interesting and good looking and smart and ambitious and he followed up today with an e-mail. Confusion abounds, my friends!

    Dinner time. I'm starving!

    • Here's a Kickass photo shoot with Tricia Helfer and Jamie Bamber. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wickedelf for sharing the link. They're gorgeous together and it's such a fun shoot.

    • Big thank yous and hugs to [livejournal.com profile] powrhug for my birthday present! It's perfect and I have just the right spot for it.

    • I got my copies of The Great Snape Debate and The Unauthorized Harry Potter today. It's really starting to feel like the end is coming and I'm reading everything I can along the way. (Though I do need to get my act together and re-read HBP before DH arrives.)

    • Orlando Bloom. *sigh* It's clearly his pretty, pretty face that does it for me but that's more than enough.

    • And the new issue of Men's Vogue has an interview with Hugh Laurie. He wears a bike so, so well.

    • I finally caught up on SG-1 (*is sad*) and have things to say about "Unending". General thoughts and one scene played out in screencaps. Come play! )

      I *heart* Daniel Jackson.

    • I never have good dreams but, last night, I had a dream that I was at a dinner party with Grace Park, Edward James Olmos, and Mary McDonnell and I spent the entire time fawning over MMD. Even in my dream it was embarrassing. Not quite related to anything but the fawning, here's a picture of EJO and MMD at the BSG finale screening. Clearly it's their rl chemistry translating to the screen. (Click for a larger version.)

    • There's a crazy thread over at house_cuddy that started when someone posted a vid that clearly stole clips from someone else's vids. There's anger and hurt feelings but what no one seems to realize (or acknowledge) is that the original batshit crazy poster/vid maker is clearly nothing more than a whore of a troll.

    • Sally always seems to like my bed best when I'm changing the sheets. (I like her best all the time.) Click for larger versions.

    • This last bit is probably only exciting to me but I finally bought a table for my entry way. The open space was driving me bonkers.

The non-spoilery things I have to say about Studio 60 include this: Bradley Whitford owns me. Matthew Perry is much cooler when he's not Chandler. I hope I'm watching, and enjoying, this show for a long, long time.

    Studio 60 (01x01) )

    House (03x03) )

    Criminal Minds (02x01) )

Justin was adorable on The Tonight Show. He's the cutest thing ever! The haircut makes him look like such a boy.

Tomorrow night is Gil With No Beard.

First? I finally watched the season finale of BSG... )

5 1/2 months until more may kill me but at least I can go back and read the most recent BSG Magazine. Oh! And, if you posted about the season finale, please link me. I want to read and comment and ponder and squee!

After the gym and brunch I went to the pool and read Blood and Fire by [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl which I printed out earlier in the week. It's so relaxing to read fic outside in the sun with a cool breeze and a cold drink and no distractions. The story was, as expected, excellent. It's just what I'm looking for in post-War, HBP compliant fic. It's raw and gritty and nothing is simple for either Harry or Snape.

I also read Like a Hurricane by [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal - a sequel to Wrap Party. It's Hugh/Robert RPS and it's fabulous. If you're interested, you should definitely read Wrap Party first.

And I'm now the proud owner of Thundercats season 1! It was a birthday present from the friends I had brunch with. They knew I'd been eying it for ages but reluctant to spend money on DVD's featuring my super secret cartoon boyfriend. *g*

(Randomly, I just realized I've been using 37 cent stamps instead of the new 39 cent stamps but my mail's been reaching its destination. Is there some sort of [very long] postal service grace period?)

7 minutes to new West Wing!
