• I'm finally starting to feel human again. After sleeping an ungodly number of hours yesterday, I rallied today for brunch with my friend Richard and a trip to the new Borders store in Canton. I can't leave a bookstore empty handed and came away with America in Space: NASA's First Fifty Years: The story of Americas space age is told with more than 400 carefully selected images. The story begins in the 1950s with intrepid test pilots venturing ever faster and higher, and opens out into the now-legendary Mercury and Apollo missions of the 1960s that made astronauts into national heroes. The large format of the book captures both the human drama and the vast scale of NASAs projects.

My only sorrow is that I have but one coffee table for all of my coffee table books. I'm already rotating Postcards from Mars, Cosmos, and The Complete Earth. Perhaps it's time to get visually creative.

  • Also on this weekend's agenda was Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. It's an incredibly whimsical book written in the format of a middle school boy's diary and told through narrative and cartoons. The book is a quick read but totally worth it (and probably a great gift for a 10- 12 year old boy). On the reading front, I'm still making my way through The Elegant Universe before I move on to Twilight.

  • It's been everywhere today but I picked up this meme from [livejournal.com profile] copracat - Comment on this post. I will choose seven userpics from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are using them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

My answers for the icons copracat picked:

Keywords: bsg grown up love - By ellymelly. Oh, my god. I could go on and on and on about everything I love about Adama & Roslin (and Adama/Roslin) and the entire arc of their friendship, specifically what we saw in "Unfinished Business." They're the grown-ups of the fleet. They have their differences and their own unique challenges but there is a spark when they're on screen together. Adama & Roslin are an example of 1 + 1 = 3. (Off topic, but so are Lee Stetson and Amanda King. And Mulder & Scully. All of the greatest pairings are better than the sum of their parts.)

Keywords: hp_sugar & spice - I loved this icon when I first uploaded it years ago but I love it even more now after seeing Rupert & Emma (and, by extension, Ron and Hermione) grow up. They're such kids in those photos and, while Rupert's face is 100% in character for something I'd expect out of Ron, Emma's face always reminds me that these are the actors, not the characters, because young Hermione was never that whimsical.

Keywords: house_hugh - This was my first House icon (by dina_the_lamp). I wasn't familiar with Hugh Laurie prior to House and he struck me from the first episode. Specific to the icon, I love the colors and crop and font.

Keywords: sally_innocent - Sally! She's so cute! I just adore this icon - mostly because I adore Sally. But it's so her. She's only 6 1/2 pounds and totally adorable and she wins you over before you have a chance to learn about her mischievous side. (Which makes her even more lovable.)

Keywords: sg1 small step - This icon is by the_cat07 and it's PERFECT. Best Teal'c line...even better than the bit about undomesticated equines...and it's the perfect icon for SG-1 and space stuff.

Keywords: giraffes on a plane - iconomicons made this icon but between_names found it for me. I LOVE giraffes. They're all over my house. I love their long necks and eyelashes and prehensile tongues and knobby knees and the way they stretch up and bend down to eat and how their 6 foot tall babies drop to the ground - plop - when they give birth. This icon is whimsical and pretty and puts a smile on my face.

Keywords: firefly kaylee - This icon is by breaksmyshadow and it captures the perfect Kaylee moment. She never misses out on small pleasures or little joys and they way she savored that strawberry is the perfect example of Kaylee indulgence.

  • I'm almost through with my Scarecrow & Mrs. King binge. Today was their wedding episode, "Do You Take This Spy," and I'd be embarrassed to admit I cried if it wasn't one of the best TV moments ever. EVER. Seriously. I say that knowing that there are (maybe) four of you reading this who even care about the show but, if you watched the series straight though, I have no doubt you'd share my love.

I'd like to say that I'd die for a reunion movie but Kate Jackson has ruined that possibility with all of her face work. Amanda would have aged gracefully with laugh lines and crows feet and Lee would have loved her all the more for it...would have loved the history of their lives etched on her face. Kate Jackson, on the other hand, was not so fond of natural aging. Case in point: Example 1) Kate as Amanda Example 2) Kate today. COULD YOU JUST WEEP??
